Melanie Russell Mosaic Artist

mel studio_edited.jpg

I work from my home & garden studio in the beautiful county of Rutland, England. My style of mosaic making is known as 'pique assiette' (which translates as 'stolen from plates') or 'memory ware'. It is the ultimate form of recycling for anyone who appreciates seeing vintage china reimagined as a piece of art.

As well as making and selling my art, I offer year-round bespoke workshops from my home studio on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. This is a lovely way to spend time with like-minded folk - or, as one recent participant described it, "... a fabulous day... a real creative escape!".

I have an extensive collection of vintage china for participants to choose from, plus sheet glass (I also do stained glass work) and cutting and grinding machines for precision work.

A craft workshop is a great social activity but it's also very mindful, for anyone in need of some creative therapy. The ideal group number is 6 people. The timings are by agreement, usually 10am to 4pm. I offer various standard base templates for participants to work on, as well as being open to creating new designs or supporting personal projects. I encourage people to bring their own china/embellishments along to make their mosaic project more meaningful.

If this is of interest, do contact me for a discussion via the links on this site and I will send more info.

My next group workshops are Saturday 10 June, Thursday 22 June & Thursday 13 July.

For other dates, do watch this space and/or get in touch if you're interested to explore possibilities. For instance, I can consider bespoke sessions for groups of friends or colleagues, and also I'm happy to deliver workshops at other venues by arrangement.

If you would like to gift a workshop experience to someone else, let me know and I can send a voucher.

I take part in selected artisan craft fairs including those hosted by Country Living magazine. I am featured in BCTF - British Craft Trade Fair. I collaborate with Makers' Mews, an artists' collective based in Stamford, and the Happy Little Pop-up Shop in Oakham.

I will be attending the following events this year:

Makers' Market, Uppingham Town Hall (Sunday 30 April, 11am - 3pm)

Extonbury in Exton, Rutland (1 July)

Rutland Garden Village Craft Fairs in Ashwell, Rutland (usually August to December, dates tbc)

Mercatum Market at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire (16-19 November)

Burghley House Christmas Fair in Stamford, Lincolnshire (23-26 November)

Makers' Mews Christmas Fair at the Stamford Arts Centre (2 December)
